Why Galipatia?

The Galipatia community offers something unique to all students. The transition from high school to college can be tough and the community provides a support system. Through the mentor/mentee program, first year students receive advice from their mentor and other upperclassmen on classes, programs, and general life at Tech. As an out of state student, I came to Virginia Tech not knowing many people. From Galipatia events and mentoring, I was able to meet and build connections with other students, get advice about classes and professors, and learn how to get to Kroger using Blacksburg Transit (the bus system).

Wanting to give back to the community, I decided to become a mentor and stay in the community for sophomore year. My experience as a mentor was very different from that of a mentee, but one thing remained constant – the warm and welcoming support system of the community. As a mentor you go through leadership training, host meetings with your mentees and also have weekly meeting with your mentor liaison (a mentor’s mentor). My experience with Galipatia has been a positive one and has helped me grow as a person.
