Things to do around Blacksburg during the summer
If you are staying in Blacksburg during summer, you will quickly realize that it becomes almost like a ghost town. The campus is basically empty and it can get pretty lonely and boring pretty quickly. That is not to say that you can’t find ways to have fun. Here are some fun things to do during summer:
Tube the New River Junction
There is a small campground down by the new river called the New River Junction. They have been operating since 1982 and are located right where the New River drops off from its limestone bed through McCoy falls. This is an awesome place to visit during a hot summer day and go tubing with your friends and even have picnic. You will also enjoy the beautiful views on the way there. So it’s a win-win.
Visit the Hahn Horticulture Garden
We are very fortunate to be living in such a beautiful campus and one of the most beautiful parts of the campus is the Hahn Horticulture Garden. Taking over almost six acres of beautiful teaching and display gardens, this is a wonderful place to visit during summer and feast your eyes upon. The garden has features such as water gardens, shade gardens, a meadow garden, and much more.
Rising Silo Brewery
If you want to support a local brewery and enjoy some beverages using ingredients grown on-site, you should visit Rising Silo Brewery. It is are located inside the Glade Road Growing Farm and brews kombucha and craft beer. They also some tasty dishes to go with beverages like their wood-fired pizza. Additionally, they have special events throughout the week such as Science on Tap, where people come to talk about their research.
